Twenty-Four

I feel sand under my feet and it’s warm. No, hot. I’m not wearing sandals and they’re nowhere near me. In fact, I’m not wearing anything familiar. I’m dressed in a long, cotton gauze caftan, which covers my legs down to the knees. Where did this garment come from? Flora? I see her from here, from this tiny spot on the hot sand, where I’m sitting with nothing under me but the caftan. No swimsuit, no underwear. What the hell is going on? Flora’s standing on the rows of railroad ties overlooking the pier, holding a fishing rod high, showing off the muscles in her upper arms. I wonder how she has the strength. I wonder how I got here.

“Yep, here we go,” she chants happily, yanking the rod upwards and showing what looks like a large yellowtail snapper flailing into a C-shape on the end of her line. And with the efficiency expected of her lifelong career, she carefully steps back and hoists the load from the water toward her iced cooler laying open beside her. Not even any reeling – just gently carrying the fish out from the water and into the ice. A pro. I stand and wave when she turns in my direction, but she doesn’t seem to see me. She was looking right at me though. Flora laughs now, a belly laugh so joyful it tips her head back toward the sky.

“Garrrrrry, Gary Piper. Come over here and help me. There is a girl looking for you–” That’s all I could hear from this distance. A man – tall, stout, walks towards her, gives her a quick squeeze and bends low to gently kiss her cheek, then picks up the line and finishes the job, wriggling the hook out and placing the fish on top of the mound of ice in her cooler. I’m completely calm watching this scene unfold, even when the man she called Gary Piper looks in my direction. Somehow I know he can’t see me either. Am I dead, I wonder, and I hear talking behind me, a man’s voice. Wait, it wasn’t behind me exactly. It was…
